Mt. Zion Community Ice Cream Social is Saturday, June 8 from 5:30-8:00 pm at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Proceeds go to help local residents facing catastrophic medical expenses. This year, our recipients are: Janet Collins (Tonya Butler’s mom), and 17-year-old Chris Kirkland. Our church would like to provide 5 or more baskets for the silent auction. They usually have a theme, and the contents cost $20-$40. We need baskets for adults and children. Please wrap the baskets in transparent plastic and have a list of the contents. Baskets need to be at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church by Monday, June 3. Check the bulletin board by the choir room for sign-up sheets to help and to donate pies and cakes (need more pies than cakes).

TED Talk _ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

“Pastor Mike,” the young lady said. She’s in first grade, and we joke around with each other a little, but this time it was clear that she was aiming for a serious conversation. It was after worship last Sunday. I sat down on the chancel steps, and we started to talk.

“I like church because it’s fun, and I make new friends” was how she started the conversation.

“I’m really, really glad that you like church,” I said. We weren’t done, though. She clearly had been thinking about this.

“I like that we can bring friends to things here. Sometimes other people bring friends, and I meet them, and I like them.” I let her know that I saw how much she tries to say hello to everyone every Sunday and how much I appreciated it, that it was what church is supposed to be like.

So, was this just a little kid’s conversation? Not so much. I remember when I would come and fill in preaching once in a great while when Joel was out of town. I was always struck by the close comradery that was apparent between the Mount Zion Presbies. This might seem like an odd comment—aren’t all Christians supposed to behave that way?—but those of us who have filled in at churches know it isn’t always the case, and many of us have had the experience of preaching at places where the atmosphere is downright cold.

Tertullian, an early Christian writer and theologian, reported comments about how non-Christians would be surprised by the degree to which Christians would become an extended family. “Look how they love one another!” they were reported as saying. One of the clearest signs of health among churches is the degree to which we are simply glad to be in one another’s presence, the degree to which our mutual affection and care is apparent even to outsiders.

That mutual feeling always has been part of Mt. Zion Presbyterian. I have every confidence that this love and care will survive whatever temporary disagreements and difficult issues may come our way.

In a difficult world, in a trying time, we are to be the ones who love.

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
