TED Talk _ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

On this Easter Sunday, our church will celebrate not only the Resurrection of Our Lord. We will also mark the successful end of our last Confirmation Class since 2015, as Chloe Davis, Emily Lewis, Connor Davis, and Corbin Davis unite with our church. They were accompanied through this journey by adult members Jill Clifton, Greg Wenndt, Bobbie Taylor, and Sonia Wenndt. Jill, Greg, Bobbie, and Sonia attended classes, assisted with activities, and shared their own faith journeys with their partners.

In the early days of the church, there were different practices regarding how one became a “member of the church”, or perhaps more appropriately “a disciple of Jesus Christ”. We have stories in the New Testament about specific individuals receiving the Holy Spirit and starting to follow Jesus (such as Cornelius the Centurion). We have, as well, stories of long periods of preparation for baptism and membership in our early centuries, sometimes taking as long as three years. Care was taken to ensure that new members were sincere; in the early years, during times of persecution, someone turning in a “New Members Class” could lead them to being imprisoned, or worse.

These days we take a significant period of time to study essential topics of faith and to make certain that the decision of the youth is not based on making their family or church happy by agreeing to join, but to take the obligation of church membership freely. Unfortunately, in many instances, the last day of Confirmation is often the last time churches see their new members. One way to combat this sad tendency is to take the fact of these youth being especially equipped for membership (as we all are), to learn what their skills are, and to ask their help in fulfilling the work of being a disciple of Christ. Please help with this by turning to our 4 new full members with church tasks, asking their assistance. Youth will take us seriously when we take them seriously.

Thanks to the many people, not just their mentors and parents, who brought these four to faith. May they, in turn, help others hear of the peace and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
