TED Talk __ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

One of Cindy’s favorite comedians and actors is Chevy Chase. One line we always remember, in a film in which he is trying to form a relationship with Goldie Hawn, who he has met in a bar, is, “But enough of this. Let’s talk about me.”

When I bring up the topic of my upcoming installation as pastor of Mount Zion Presbyterian Church, I feel as if I am saying, “Let’s talk about me,” and it’s awkward. I have been with you for four years. Many of us are familiar with the ins-and-outs of Presbyterian categories of pastors, including transitional positions such as interim and “covenant” pastors (the latter is my current category), but many scratch their heads when they hear these terms. Perhaps the easiest way to think of it is I’m becoming the “settled” pastor as Joel, Vern, and Jeff were.

That is an honor, and an exciting challenge as well. Because of close relationships in the church as well as the more traditional culture of Mount Zion, the numerical decline that has affected most American churches has been held at bay. Those changes are now in our midst, and while they may be threatening, they also present exciting opportunities for mission and outreach. Our faith in God’s future will accompany us into this invigorating time. The strong lay leadership at MZPC, and our history of rising to challenges, gives me great hope.

This installation, after all, isn’t ultimately about me. It is about the oldest church in Macon County that has given birth to many of its most significant institutions. It is about families that rebuilt a church in the early 1950s after a devastating fire (paid for by many fried chicken dinners). It is about a group of faithful Christians who have reached out to neighborhood children through a LOGOS ministry for 33 years; helped care for others of God’s children through DOVE, Good Samaritan Inn, Habitat for Humanity, and Hearts and Hands for Honduras; supporting struggling youth at Milligan Academy and Kemmerer Village. It’s about the prayer and praise of an awesome God. So, come join us at 3:00 p.m. on September 29 as we celebrate our common ministry (there will be the usual 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services on that day). And stay for ice cream! It’s a sacrament in the Wakeland household.

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
