Mike’s Musings

Happy Birthday!  May 23 is Pentecost Sunday, typically known as the “Birthday of the Church.”  On that first Pentecost, there were people in Jerusalem from all the known world.  Different cultures, different languages, different races—all were present and represented, and despite all their differences, they understood one another!  Pentecost is linked to fire and the color red, because scripture tells us, “Suddenly…divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them.”  Let’s all wear red together on May 23!  What a great birthday celebration it will be…except in the way that it won’t be:  bidding farewell to Rich Hansen.  Rich, who has been with us for four wonderful years as Choir Director, is bidding us farewell.  We’ll have a chance to tell him what he has meant to us on Pentecost.

We’ll also have a chance to give a special “birthday present” to the church.  On Pentecost, the church’s birthday, we’re asking for a contribution of $42 for each current, voting member of the church from your family to pay our “Per Capita”.  Per capita is a set amount of money — sometimes referred to as “apportionment” — per member that congregations pay to the larger Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  Said another way, it is like a Presbyterian community fund — part of the glue that holds Presbyterians together. Because Presbyterians share in the benefit of the PC(USA)’s system of government, the expenses associated with performing the functions of that system are shared by everyone.

Many denominations have an equivalent to “Per Capita”.  Some years ago, our church deviated from the usual practice and stopped paying “Per Capita” from our operating fund.  This ultimately resulted in our only paying about one-fourth of our assessment, causing other churches to make up the difference.  On this Pentecost, let’s carry our own weight by giving the “Per Capita” Pentecost birthday gift!
