TED Talk___ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

It’s rainy this week, and not yet really warm. But spring begins on March 19, and with it, signs of new life—buds on the trees, birds making it back this way in their flocks. It calls to mind the scripture from Isaiah 43: “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”

What “new thing” is God’s spirit nudging us to help with in the months ahead? Let me put it this way: if we were starting MZPC over, what would you want to include?

Maybe it would be a new form of worship. Molly led us in experiences of “Dinner Worship” last summer. What if we experimented with that more?

Maybe it would be a new way to respond to deaths in our faith family. What if we had a Grief Group to reach out when there is a death in our faith family?

Maybe it would simply be a new attitude about our place in the community. For decades, people came to us; maybe now we need to go out into the community. What if, for example, we were to have a Bible study meeting at some eatery in town, or if, on Ash Wednesday, we were to have “Ashes to Go” available in the community?

At the Presbyterian Women gathering this week, there was a presentation about the horrible threat of Human Trafficking. What if we learned more about what some churches do about this awful problem?

We have a Spirituality Group meeting on Tuesday afternoons. What if they would help us get to some of the great program offerings at the Chiara Center in Springfield or started a monthly prayer group?

People have very different opinions about the direction of our country, and that often leads to anger and arguments. What if we learned from a group like “Better Angels” about having healthy, respectful conversations about such matters?

What are your new ideas? We don’t have to try all of the above ideas, but do any spark your interest, or has the Lord planted a different notion in your mind?

Talk about what God has planted in your heart with our leaders, with me, with your pewmates. What if, instead of worrying about the resources needed for new projects, we assumed that, if we identified the right new efforts through prayer and listening for God, that God will bless us with the people and resources we need to do Kingdom work?

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
