TED Talk___ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

   Some of you heard some of the following on Sunday.  Please bear with me.

      The notion that we are all children of God--who could disagree with that?  But in the last couple of years, it has become clearer to me how much that statement is part of our church life here.  I know it came to us by way of LOGOS (after coming to us originally, of course, via Jesus Christ).  It particularly struck home with me when, in late sermon preparation last week, I was trying to say something faithful about Minnesota, after having gotten geared up for a Pentecost/"the Birthday of the Church" message.  Like a lot of Christian folk, my mind had been drawn back to a fairly well-known passage from Galatians 3: “In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed your-selves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”

     A fellow named Stephen Patterson used to teach New Testament at Eden Seminary in St. Louis. We weren't close friends, but he was kind enough to fill the pulpit when I was pastoring Tyler Place Presbyterian Church in St. Louis.  Patterson just recently came out with a book called "The Forgotten Creed." He contends that the quoted part of Galatians 3 comes from one of the very first statements of faith of the early Christian community, the original version of which he reconstructs this way:

     For you are all children of God in the Spirit.
     There is no Jew or Greek,
     There is no slave or free,
     There is no male and female;
     For you are all one in the Spirit.

     In the midst of these trying times, coming across this contention that “you are all children of God in the Spirit” was one of our earliest core beliefs and linking it to “Child of God” outlook here has helped my heart hold together.  Instead of my spirit being captured by the sight of rioting and looting, it helps me focus on stories of black men protecting a lone white cop in a crowd separated from his platoon, or a group of policemen stating their opinions about the use of force in question by all taking a knee.

     This trying period is one of those times in which our true character, as a people of faith and as a nation, is revealed.  In our actions, large and small, we have the chance to show that one of our core beliefs is that we are all children of God.  May we live up to it.
