Worship in the Annex is Sunday, August 4 at 10:00 am. A potluck will follow. Our Outreach Committee will be providing fried chicken, meats, drinks, and table service. Please bring a dish to share.

Don’t forget your offering, too!

Faith, Food, and Fellowship, F3, is an evening of faith formation for ALL ages!  We will start with sharing a meal (food is provided), followed by a Bible study for adults, Bible Study and Activities for kids, and close the evening together with song and prayer. The last F3 evening is Wednesday, August 7 from 6:00-7:30 pm and starts in the Fellowship Hall. Our mission project is to donate items for those who are leaving Dove's Domestic Shelter, a shelter for abused women and their children, and starting completely over at a new home with nothing but their clothes. Some items could be: new bedding sets/pillows/etc. (twin size), bathroom essentials including towels, kitchen essentials including silverware, plates, bowls, pots/pans/etc., Walmart gift cards, or a small token house warming gift to commemorate the achievement. Any questions, see Molly.

Blessing of the Backpacks is Sunday, August 11 at the 10:00 am Worship Service. Kids and adults, bring your backpacks and briefcases for a blessing before the new school year begins!

Family Fun Day is Sunday, August 11.  We will go to Subway (closest to McGaughey) for lunch and then head to Overlook Adventure Park for miniature golf. Family Special on Sundays – 4 golfers for $20 (children must be under age 12 and 1 adult must be present). Any questions, see Molly.

Volunteers Needed for Habitat for Humanity Work Day (salesclerks, cleaning, unloading, stocking items donated, and home construction site), on Friday, August 16 at 10:00 am. We meet at the Decatur ReStore located at 932 East Wood Street. For more information contact Mark Milnor at 217-358-2691 or go to www.habitat.org .

Book Club meets on Monday, August 19 at 7:00 pm to discuss All We Ever Wanted by Janelle Brown.

TED Talk __ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

This Sunday we’ll have two distinct worship experiences. We’ll have our 8:00 a.m. service in our sanctuary as we always do, with communion included. At 10:00 a.m., we’ll be having a “table centered” worship service in the Annex. Lunch will follow—Presbyterians eat to the glory of God!

There are several different “roots” to our plans for this Sunday. After our decision to forego Worship in the Park this summer, the Outreach Committee wanted to provide a fellowship experience. They will be providing fried chicken, other meats, table service, and drinks. Thanks to Rod, Bev, Carolyn, Sally, Sharon, Jill, Diana, and Jan for their leadership with our outreach efforts.

Also, Molly and the Christian Nurture Committee had been searching for a different format for summer programming. Many churches have been changing, shifting their Vacation Bible Schools. Molly and Christian Nurture have opted for a “table centered” summer program that premiered last Wednesday night. It was well received; over 40 were in attendance. We were asked to listen and respond to Biblical passages and to reflect on where we have detected God’s presence in our lives in recent days. I was highly encouraged by the mix of ages enjoying one another’s presence.

This echoed a conversation we had with a handful of “somewhat younger adults” a few months ago. We asked for some time from our friends in their 30s and 40s to hear what they were getting from their church involvement, and what they needed that they weren’t finding here. The conversation eventually drifted to what has come to be called “dinner worship”. There are some churches across the country who are experimenting with opportunities for prayer and praise that are set around dinner tables. It seems to create a more hospitable atmosphere, for many, than being invited to formal worship. The early church did something like this. “Agape meals” featured hymns, a message, prayers, and a meal, including the observance of communion.

This Sunday isn’t going to go quite that far. You’ll be asked to bring a side dish to share in our after-worship potluck, as well as to participate in worship with an open heart and mind. If you cannot join us this Sunday, please remember that church expenses continue even in your absence.

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
