TED Talk___ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

As you hopefully know, this week includes Valentine’s Day! Some background from Companion to the Calendar, by Mary Ellen Hynes:

“There were probably two Valentines, both martyred around the year 269. One of them may have been the bishop of Terni, Italy. In those days of persecution, Christians met secretly and hid their faith to protect their lives. Bishops were unable to hide and were often the first Christians in their communities to be tortured and killed. Often a bishop died in the hope that other Christians would not be hunted out.”

“The other Valentine was a priest and physician in Rome. A legend says that he sent letters of love and encouragement to the people of his community who lived in fear of persecution. From that legend the practice of sending valentines on his feast day may have begun.”

“But there is another explanation for the custom of sending valentines. In the Middle Ages people believed that on February 14, the day St. Valentine died, birds began choosing their mates for the springtime. So this day came to be thought as the perfect day to choose a sweetheart.”

************

I started back to work on Monday, as the staff met at Las Margaritas to take Gloria Marshall out for her birthday. That’s the way to start back! I am very grateful to Gloria and Molly Tenuto, and Gloria Moss and Karen Jones in the office, for their work in my absence. A particular “hats off” to Dave Taylor, who preached and handled funerals in my absence. Tim Haworth’s preaching was appreciated, and as always, our Session Elders stepped up when asked.

You sent so many cards and well wishes to me and to Cindy, and we felt your prayers and love. Cindy has taken good care of me. I suppose I consider myself a “pescevegetarian” now, sticking to vegetarian food and fish. Through all this, I’ve lost 30 pounds.

We’ll see if the weight loss and the diet continue. For now, please know how much I have valued your patience and good wishes. To everyone out there—particularly men—who suspects there might be something wrong, please know that there is no shame in seeing your doctor!

See you back in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike-
