Heaven and Nature Sing

This particular Advent season we are crafting our worship around the 300th anniversary of “Joy to the World”. Isaac Watts wrote the hymn from the inspiration of Psalm 98 (“Sing to the Lord a new song;” “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!”). Each worship service is exploring what his lyrics, with different meanings for “joy,” mean to our lives today. We will hear a story and song we’ve heard before, giving thanks to God for the love and life entering our lives anew.

In chronological time, Advent began once again this past week. Yet we welcome the Christ child into our hearts in what we call “Kairos time,” which is to say God’s time, which breaks forth in our lives in a way different than linear time. When we welcome God among us at Advent, we rejoice, and the heavens and nature sing, no matter how many times we have heard the song before.

Thank you to the Mighty Mount Zion Presbyterian Church Players, both the 8:00 am and 10:00 am versions, who are devoting their time to delivering the short skits at the beginning of worship which set forth the theme for the day.

A “God Sighting”

Something that’s part of the DNA of MZPC is checking in with each other with regard to what your recent “God Sighting” might be. At our most recent staff meeting, I lifted up the appearance of our Chancel Choir at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Though originally scheduled for another date, it ended up being a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with fellow Christians. Thanks to Rich Hansen for helping include us in this event, a fundraiser to assist students in service learning projects at the African-American Cultural and Genealogical Society.
