Book Club meets on Monday, October 15 at 7:00 pm to discuss Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult.

Harvest Festival: The bazaar will be from 8:00 am to the end of the event, and the soup supper will be from 4:00-7:00 pm on Saturday, October 20. We welcome donations of crafts and baked goods for the bazaar. These items can be brought to the Annex from 5:00-6:30 pm on Friday, October 19, or before 8:00 am on Saturday, October 20. The String Band will entertain us at 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Tickets are now being sold at the front and east doors of the church on Sunday mornings and in the church office during the week: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4-10, children 3 and under free.

Interested in singing in the choir, but can't fully commit? How about just singing with the choir for the Christmas cantata? There will be a read-through session of cantata music on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:15 pm in the sanctuary. Rehearsals will run 7:15-9:00 pm on Wednesdays in November and December. Cantata will be on Sunday, December 23 at the 10:00 am service. Singers are welcome!!!! Contact Rich Hansen at rjhansen74@gmail.com for more info.

Trunk or Treat is Wednesday, October 31 from 5:30-7:00 pm in the Annex. Candy donations for this night are being accepted. It is a great way to reach out to our community and for children to trick or treat on Halloween night in a safe environment. We typically have about 300 kids come through! Bring your treats to the Annex where tables will be set up with some decorations. Please feel free to add your own. You may start arriving at 5:00 pm. It’s tons of fun. See you there!

TED Talk _ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

I attended seminary in the late 1980s. During a particular class, a student inquired about quoting books during a sermon. The professor remarked that, as of that year, more people were seeing the most popular film of the year than were reading the #1 book on the New York Times bestseller list, and thus, referring to movies would be more effective than quoting even the most popular books.

If you have ever wondered whether a deeper meaning might be coming at you from the big screen, you know how effective movies can be as a mode of communication. Offerings such as The Ten Commandments or The Robe help us imagine key events in our “family story” (I have a soft spot in my heart for how the relationship between Joseph and Mary was depicted in 2006’s The Nativity Story). Films such as The Last Temptation of Christ or The DaVinci Code ignited controversy that led to an unusually high degree of public theological debate. And I’m pretty certain that Tom Hanks’ last words about sacrifice in Saving Private Ryan, “Deserve this”, made it into hundreds of sermons across the country.

On the evening of Friday, November 9, another new “small group” and fellowship opportunity will come to members and friends of Mt. Zion Pres.: “Faith and Film”. We’ll start with planning to see a film together on the second Friday of the month, and follow it with discussion somewhere where we can have dessert! Sometimes we’ll be able to plan what movie we will see and announce it the Sunday before, but sometimes we’ll simply need to say when and at which theatre we are planning to meet, and take it from there. If you are a film buff, sure hope you plan on joining us on November 9!

************

You won’t only have the opportunity to eat dessert in the pursuit of Godly knowledge (see above); you can have some eggs early in the day on October 24 at the Mt. Zion Convention Center. At 6:30 am on that day, the doors will open for our annual Community Prayer Breakfast. Advance tickets are required. For further information, please phone the Convention Center at 864-2526.

See you in worship and in service!

Pastor Mike
