Confirmation began two weeks ago with a class of 4 youth: Chloe Davis, Connor Davis, Corbin Davis, and Emily Lewis. We meet on Sunday mornings at 8:30 am, yes they get there that early, as do their mentors! A flip chart has been placed in the Fellowship Hall for the congregation to share a promise with the confirmands. This is a way for the church to show that they are supporting the youth during this very important time of their faith journey. There are a few ideas up on the board already, please feel free to add an idea to it if you have one. If you can't think of a different idea, but want to still show your support, please sign the board. Think of this as an encouragement card to the confirmands. They are asking good questions and are learning what it means to have faith in God, let's continue to encourage them!

Women’s Breakfast is Saturday, February 16 at 9:00 am at the New Moon Café located at 3755 East William Street Road. Let’s outnumber the Men’s Breakfast!

Annual Meeting of the Congregation is Sunday, February 17 after 10:00 am worship.

You are invited to Anna Belle Farrell’s 94th Birthday Celebration on Sunday, February 17 after 10:00 am worship in the Fellowship Hall. Cake will be served. No gifts, however, cards are welcome.

TED Talk _ (Theology, Education, Discipleship)

Witnessing to Our Faith

An interesting question came up in our new Confirmation Class this past Sunday. I was asked whether “witnessing” was important for Presby-terians. For a lot of churches, witnessing means telling their faith story—how they came to Christ.

In the early years of the church, the notion of witnessing had to do with courage. Saying out loud that one followed Christ could be physically dangerous. Following Christ could come at a cost.
Witnessing looks different these days. Some reduce it to a spoken formula. For Presbyterians, we show who we are by what we do as well as what we say. When we spend time tutoring school children or work in the food line at Good Samaritan or help out with Habitat for Humanity, we are letting people know who we are
- and Whose we are.

There is one time we are all called to claim our faith publicly. When someone joins a Presbyterian congregation, unlike those churches in which one can join privately, we respond to questions about our faith in front of the congregation we are joining. We make our professions of faith during worship, with other people.

Our Confirmation Class is spending weeks going over those questions. The contemporary version of them is as follows:

- Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?
- Who is your Lord and Savior?
- Will you be Christ's faithful disciple obeying his word and showing his love?
- Will you devote yourself to the church's teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers?

Witnessing to Christ may not come at the risk of physical danger the way it once did (at least in the West). Yet our youth are being urged to do some-thing that is counter to the prevailing culture. Elsewhere, Molly describes how we can support them in their journey. I hope you can find the way you’re comfortable with to assist them.

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike
