The Spirituality of Committees

Ah, the joy of committees!  We Presbyterians joke about them all the time:

-       “I searched all the parks in all the cities and didn’t see a single statue of a committee.”

-       “How many Presbyterians does it take to change a light bulb?”

“Well, it should require about five committees to review the idea first.  If each is staffed with half a dozen members, that's what ... 30?”

-        Here’s the Presbyterian version of John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, he refused to send a committee.”

Actually, our reliance on groups of people has everything to do with how we believe the Holy Spirit works.  John Calvin, the 16th century theologian who strongly influenced how Presbyterian churches work, felt that discerning Christ’s will is difficult, and to rely on one person to do it is dangerous.  In groups, many points of view being shared makes it more likely that we will hear God speaking.

Having a group to undertake tasks also shows the truth of the adage, “Many hands make light work”.  Those who visited our Mission Fair last Sunday in the Fellowship Hall certainly saw how much could be done with a dedicated group of Presbyterians!  That said, there is always a cycle in the life of committees, and a few of ours need more shoulders to put to the wheel.  Our Personnel and Finance committees are two which have been high performing but which need additional minds and spirits and hearts to shoulder their responsibilities.

If you know you can do this work, please step forward with a word to me or one of our Elders.

See you in worship and in service--

   Pastor Mike

A few weeks ago I was reading about a book called "She's Still There."  I realized God was calling me to open up my house, mess and all, to invite women from my neighborhood and surrounding area to do a Bible study on this book.  We begin our study this week, and I am excited as to where God will lead us!                                                                                   Blessings, Molly
