A Prayer for Advent

I pray first for my Advent Calendar.  Lord, I can’t have one of the calendars that children frequently get now—my cholesterol count and AIC forbid it.  Instead of chocolate, grace my days with patience.  Instead of calories, fill me with the light of your Christ, coming to show the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I pray for my shopping.  God of all generous gifts, you hear us always complain of the consumerism of this season.  What can I do to make my giving acts of love and not simple seasonal obligations?  Can you help me pray for each person as I contemplate their gifts?  Can your Spirit move me to offer gifts of time and companionship?  Can you focus me on making memories as much as fashion statements?

I pray for my Christmas observance.  The years are moving along, Lord.  I no longer have the family and friends with whom I celebrated past seasons.  I value the past, but you are not done with me yet.  Can you help me see this Christmas and those to come as invitations to celebrate your presence among us in new ways, rather than just as pale imitations of past years?

And Lord, I pray for my eyes this Advent.  Help me see the friend who is without a spouse for the first time, the youth who is not sure what this God thing is all about, the parent desperate to know how to get gifts for her children.  Help me see every opportunity to live out your love.

I pray for my Advent, Lord, to be your Advent.

                         Pastor Mike
