Mt. Zion Community Ice Cream Social is Saturday, June 3 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.  Proceeds go to help local residents facing catastrophic medical expenses.  This year’s recipients are Jackson Scharf and Bailey Huddleston.  Our church would like to provide 5 or more baskets for the silent auction.  They usually have a theme, and the contents cost $20-$40.  We need baskets for adults and for children.  Please wrap the baskets in transparent plastic and have a list of the contents.  Baskets need to be at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church by Wednesday, May 31.  See the bulletin board by the choir room for sign-up sheets to help.

Bell/Chime System   Silence is golden, but not in this case.  That has not been the song nor does any sound play from our Bell/Chime System.  A sound missing throughout our community.  Our current system is in need of repair.  This system was a gift to the church from one of our departed members 12 years ago.  The system is of older technology and was repaired once.  It is not repairable now.  The company has an updated technology and will cost approximately $4,500.00, including a generous discount.  Thanks to some generous donations, a fund raising has been started to repair/upgrade the system.  For the next few months donations can be made to the Bell/Chime Fund.

TED Talk

(Theology, Enlightenment, Discipleship)

So which of the Commandments do you think we have particular problems with here at MZPC?  Ah, I can imagine you going over the list of the Big 10 as you read this, with perhaps the more salacious commandments in mind.  My own answer might surprise you, though:  we have significant problems with #4:  “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

This isn’t a screed from the Pastor about being in church on Sunday (although the typical mainline church of 400 would usually average something like 160, rather than our average of 130, on a given week).  This is more about our difficulty with relaxing and the busy pace of modern life.  This is more about remembering to take some kind of break from work and worry, in addition to enjoying worship on Sunday morning.  This is more about remembering to relish the joy that God’s gift of human life can give us, rather than adopting the attitude of H.L. Menken, who once made a pointed remark about certain Christians being “people who have a deep, foreboding fear that somebody, somewhere, might be having a good time.”

We SHOULD be having a good time!  And while not every human need must find an answer by way of a church program, maybe we should give the occasional church game night another try.  I admit I have a vested interest in this notion:  I need to find a chess partner.

The possibility of a game night has been mentioned for awhile.  In the near future, we’ll be circulating an insert in the church bulletin, asking what time might work for you.  In the meantime, start practicing with those knights and rooks and bishops, because I’m ready!

See you in worship and in service,

Pastor Mike

P.S.  Don’t forget to wear RED on Pentecost, June 4!

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in helping make the passing of our mother easier during a difficult time.  Rev. Wakeland, your message was “spot-on”.  A special thanks to the ladies who prepared the delicious meal and allowed our family and friends the opportunity to visit at length.  Bless you all.                          The family of Jean Clayton,

                                    Ron, Phyllis, and Vernon

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Sr. High Youth Group at the plant sale and at Krave.  We made about $275 with the plant sale and $55 with Krave.  We greatly appreciate your support!                       Blessings, Molly Tenuto

We just wanted to send a quick THANK YOU to everyone’s thoughts and prayers during Wyatt’s surgery a couple weeks ago.  Thank you to the CARE TEAM for the wonderful dinner they provided.  Thank you to Pastor Mike for coming to STL Children’s to keep us occupied.  And, to the Prayer Shawl committee for Wyatt’s beautiful blanket.  We gratefully appreciate it all.
