The date of the Church Potluck to

celebrate Mike’s Change in Terms

of Call will be changed to June 25

after the 10:00 am worship service.

It will be held in the Fellowship Hall

due to rental of Annex on that date.  We heard

concerns that Father’s Day presented conflicts for

many of you, so we are happy to change the date.

Please bring a dish to share.  We will provide

chicken and table service.  Hope to see you there.

Sr. High Youth are leaving June 14 for the Mission Trip.  We will be staying in New Albany, Indiana, but our mission work will be done in Louisville, Kentucky.  We will be working on houses, in a soup kitchen, and at a children’s foster home.  Please pray for all of us while we are gone, so that we may be the hands and feet of Jesus while we are there.

TED Talk

(Theology, Enlightenment, Discipleship)

Last Sunday we participated in a particularly Presbyterian ritual.  When we ordained two new Elders, we invited those previously ordained as church officers for “laying on of hands.”  The origin of this practice goes back to the Jewish tribes of the Old Testament; in Acts 8, we have the first mention in a Christian context—Peter and John asking God’s Spirit to empower the new believers in Samaria.  This practice symbolizes two things—asking God to bless that person’s work in God’s name, and showing that the community grants the new church officer authority to do her or his work.

This coming Sunday we do something similar with those of our Mission Trip group who are able to be present.  Mark Milnor, Gay Helgemo, Chloe Butler, Brennan Butler, Ryan Gould, Zach Goller, Ethan Winick, and of course Molly Tenuto will go forth, representing us, to do Christ’s work in Louisville, Kentucky.  We have encouraged both youth and adults to take advantage of mission trip opportunities for many years, not just because the work ends up being the proverbial -cup of cold water offered in my name’-Matthew 10:42—but because we benefit and are taught as well by the experience.  Mount Zion Presbyterian Church has always wonderfully supported these trips, not only financially, but also in prayer.

So, during the 10:00 am service this Sunday, we will “commission” our friends as they go forth.  Our Book of Order (our church “rule book” in the best sense) says, “In the life of the Christian community, God calls people to particular acts of discipleship to use their personal gifts for service in the Church and in the world.  These specific acts may be strengthened and confirmed by formal recognition in worship.”  When they return, our friends will tell us what they learned and report on any “God sightings.”  Please keep them in your prayers during the period June 14-21.

See you in worship and in service,

              Pastor Mike
