MINISTRY TO MILLIGAN

You’ve heard descriptions of our exciting new mission with Milligan Academy by mail, in the

newsletter, and in worship.  On this coming Sunday, August 6, a Communion Sunday, we urge you to bring items that Milligan students may need as school starts back up—school supplies, clothing, nonperishable food items (copies of the list of needed items are in the sanctuary and was included in the letter sent to you about this project).  You can simply bring the items to church, where we’ll have places to collect the Milligan items, OR you may wish to bring the items forward as part of our Communion service.

Thanks be to the Holy Spirit for blessing us with this opportunity to show God’s love to others.

Room Refurbishing in Honor of

Anna Mae Brueggemann

The Session announces news of this very generous gift:  Anna Mae’s family is making a gift to the church for the updating of the “Meeting Room”/“Adult Education Room”, that is to say, Room #204.  This room gets very heavy use, and Anna Mae’s family chose this among several potential projects, feeling that the redesign for increased adult education and meeting use would be the best fit for Anna Mae’s legacy among us.  There will be more news on this project as time goes by, and in due course, we will have a ceremony giving thanks for the Anna Mae Brueggemann Room.

SHHHH!  It’s a Surprise!

We will celebrate

Lois Sorrel’s 90th Birthday

at Coffee Fellowship on

Sunday, August 13 at 11:00 am.

Church in the Park is Sunday, August 27 at 10:00 am at Spitler Woods, Horseshoe Pavilion.  The meat dishes and drinks will be provided.  Everyone is asked to bring a dish to share, their own table service, and their lawn chairs.

Game Night is coming.  After going through

game night responses, we have reached the conclusion to host game night on the first

Friday of each month and the third

Thursday each month.  I am sorry if these

are nights you cannot attend, but Thursday

and Friday worked best for most people.

You are welcome to attend one or both nights.  We will meet at 7:00 pm in Room 103 on Thursdays and at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall on FridaysOur first game night is on Friday, September 8.

We are updating our Military Bulletin Board.

If anyone has an immediate family member in the service, please bring a picture to the church office with their name and address included on the picture.

TED Talk

(Theology, Enlightenment, Discipleship)

It has taken a good chunk of my lifetime for poetry to find a place to lodge in me.  I’m sharing the following for those to whom it will speak.

WHAT YOU MISSED THAT DAY YOU WERE ABSENT FROM FOURTH GRADE-

Brad Aaron Modlin

Mrs. Nelson explained how to stand still and listen to the wind, how to find meaning in pumping gas,

how peeling potatoes can be a form of prayer.  She took questions on how not to feel lost in the dark.

After lunch, she distributed worksheets that covered ways to remember your grandfather’s

voice.  Then the class discussed falling asleep without feeling you had forgotten to do something else—

something important—and how to believe the house you wake in is your home.  This prompted

Mrs. Nelson to draw a chalkboard diagram detailing how to chant the Psalms during cigarette breaks,

and how not to squirm for sound when your own thoughts are all you hear; also, that you have enough.

The English lesson was that I am is a complete sentence.

What poetry speaks to you?  See you in worship

and in service—                          Pastor Mike

The next Herald will be published August 16.

We are updating our list of musicians who want to participate in worship.  You can be novice/ advanced, youth/senior, vocalist/instrumentalist, and have a short-term/long-term commitment.  Our string band will be forming again for the worship-in-the-park service and welcome acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, autoharp, fiddle, and other "old-timey" instrument players.  We are also updating our list for substitute organist/pianist.  If you or someone you know is interested in any of these music ministry opportunities, please contact the church office or Roma Allison.
